In 2011, 4409 Hungarians requested refugee status in Canada compared to 2300 a year earlier and 2440 before the previous year. Canada is far the most popular destination for asylum applicants according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The second highest destination was Belgium last year at 188 requests, and then the United States received 47 requests while both Norway and France were also popular at 33 applications.

Hard line on asylum applications

The Canadian government does not seem prepared to reinstate visa requirement.

The Canadian government has taken a hard line on Roma asylum in recent years. The first spike was 95 Roma from Czech Republic two years ago. This is to persuade the government to impose the visa requirement for Czech citizens and even the Immigration Minister said that the Czech Romas' applications are not real.

While Hungarians are the most asylum seekers, the Canadian government does not seem prepared to reinstate visa requirement. In 2007, when visa was required, 34 asylum claims were received from Hungarian citizens.

The Canadian immigration minister has responded to this as they regularly review the visa policy. An unnamed government source is, however, ruling out the immediate plan to reintroduce a visa requirement on Hungarian citizens referring to its impact on Canada’s trade relationship with Hungary.
